Only 28% Of Firms Are Complying With GDPR: Study

Yet another study has come out showing that firms are lagging in GDPR compliance.

The Capgemini Research Institute reports that only 28% of European firms have achieved full adherence with the law that took effect in May 2018.

U.S. firms are closest — 35% were compliant as of June of this year.

Here is how several other countries stack up:

  • UK — 33%
  • Germany — 33%
  • The Netherlands — 31%
  • France — 28%
  • Spain — 21%
  • Italy — 21%
  • Sweden — 18%

According to Help Net Security, the challenges include:

  • Aligning legacy IT systems — 38%
  • GDPR complexity — 36%
  • Prohibitive costs — 33%

However, compliant firms say they are enjoying improved customer trust, brand image and employee morale. In addition, they have benefitted from improvements in their IT systems and cybersecurity practices.

A study last year found that 78% of companies said they would be ready by the date of GDPR implementation.

However, a recent study by Egress Software Technologies Ltd. and OnePoll found that while 96% of UK firms have invested in processes for handling GDPR and data, only 48% are in full compliance.

Moreover, 35% are now less interested in GDPR, compared with 27% that took it seriously at the outset.
