Bustle, the digital women’s publication at Bustle Digital Group, laid off at least 10 members of its staff and contributors yesterday.

Those laid off include movie editor Sage Young, lifestyle editors Emma Lord and Tanya Ghahremani, senior books editor Cristina Arreola, associate entertainment news editor Mallory Cara, and celebrity and entertainment news editor Jamie Primeau, Variety reports.

A company spokesperson said in a statement published by Variety: “Bustle’s new editorial leadership will soon be announcing several marquee hires as we prepare for a major site relaunch in early 2020.”

Emma Rosenblum was tapped to lead as EIC of BDG’s Lifestyle Group, which includes Bustle, The Zoe Report, Elite Daily and Romper, in June.

Bustle founder and EIC Kate Ward left the company in April.

Laid-off staffers told CNN the environment has been tense at the digital media company because of “editorial changes and pressure on writers to those changes.”

One laid-off staffer added: “This was completely out of the blue. Being that I've been with the company so long and have reached the top of the pay scale, I have to imagine that has to contribute to why I was one of the ones eliminated.”

The layoffs are reported to be due to a restructuring at the company.

Layoffs hit the company earlier this year. When BDG acquired science and business entertainment site Inverse in July, it laid off five staffers.

Inverse marked BDG's eighth acquisition, which include Nylon, with plans to revive its print edition, Gawker and Mic.

Mic laid off most of its 100-person unionized staff early in 2019 before its sale. The outlet relaunched two months later with two nonunion staff writers.

When Gawker’s relaunch was put on indefinite hold in July, the entire staff was also laid off, including EIC Dan Peres, editorial director Carson Griffith, writer Nathan Hopper and sales executive Amanda Hale.
