The Fort Worth Star-Telegram will stop printing several weekly newspapers. Final editions will be published on Christmas Day.

The McClatchy-owned community papers shuttering include: Arlington Citizen-Journal, Keller Citizen, Mansfield News-Mirror, Star-Telegram Express, Star-Telegram Northeast and Weatherford Star-Telegram.

Most of the publications had been distributed for free. Some were included in the daily Star-Telegram.

“At a challenging time in the local media industry, we’re putting all of our resources into the Fort Worth Star-Telegram to safeguard local journalism and the value that a local newsroom brings to communities,” stated Ryan Mote, publisher of the Star-Telegram.

“All of the local news and reporting our neighbors enjoyed in these community weeklies is available in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram,” he added.

Mote said much of  the content in those community weekly papers was already coming from the Star-Telegram.  That content will continue to be published in the Star-Telegram and on star-telegram.com, he added.

Earlier this week, McClatchy's Miami Herald announced it would no longer produce a print newspaper on Saturdays, starting March 21.

McClatchy announced it would also end the Saturday print editions of its Washington papers The News Tribune and The Olympian. McClatchy papers The Fresno Bee and Modesto Bee will end print Saturday editions in January 2020.

“We are seeing shifts in how our readers are engaging with this valued content," Aminda Marqués González, president, publisher-executive editor at the Miami Herald, wrote in a note to readers published on Tuesday. 

"More and more of our customers are reading our local journalism online. This is not only a trend in Miami, it is a media industry trend, and in fact, all industries."
