'Quartz,' CNN Create Coronavirus-Focused Newsletter, Podcast

A few media companies are creating specific products to cover the spread of the coronavirus.

Quartz is launching a free newsletter that will examine how the coronavirus is affecting the global economy.

"We’re being inundated with information about coronavirus, so we know our readers are too," Quartz executive editor Kira Bindrim told Publishers Daily. "Our goal in starting a newsletter is to help them cut through that noise—to provide a clear, concise outline of what’s happening, and focus on the wider impacts of the epidemic versus incremental updates."

The newsletter, called “Need to Know: Coronavirus,” will release its first installment tomorrow, and hit subscribers’ inboxes a few times a week.

It will help readers “understand the ways in which one disease is impacting not just global health, but markets, industries, politics and the way we live our lives,” according to the business publisher.

All of Quartz’s coverage of the coronavirus can be found here.

Today, CNN released a podcast called “Coronavirus: Fact vs Fiction,” with CNN chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. At least 102 cases have been reported in the U.S., resulting in six deaths, reports CNN.

Gupta will cover the latest news of the coronavirus, and “make sense of the headlines, speak with the experts and give you all the information you need to stay safe and healthy,” according to the company.

“The launch of this podcast is a prime example of how we are utilizing our audio team as an integral part of our comprehensive content and programming strategy,” Courtney Coupe, vice president of CNN Digital Productions, told Publishers Daily. “There is clearly a huge appetite for a wide variety of resources on the coronavirus at the moment. We’re making sure to deliver that information to our audience in the numerous ways they consume their news.”

The first episode — now available on all major podcast platforms — answers the basic questions: “What is it? What are the symptoms? Who is most at risk? How does it spread? And how afraid should we be?”

Episodes will be released each weekday.

LiveScience reports the coronavirus (called COVID-19) is estimated to have now affected nearly 90,000 people worldwide, citing the Johns Hopkins virus dashboard.
