UK's Unlimited Group's 'Mental Health Champions' Program

As part of Unlimited’s wider initiative to encourage staff to take care of themselves, the agency will train its 600 employees to become accredited “Mental Health Champions” equipped to manage their own mental health care as well as to help others.

The extensive training program will cover modules including self-care, stress awareness, common signs for mental health problems, anxiety/depression, supporting others, gambling, addiction and people in crisis.

These lessons are designed to provide workers with practical tools to intervene if colleagues are showing signs they might be struggling with mental health issues. Upon completion, participants will receive action plans, resources to help change behavioral patterns and progress check-ins. Training is also aimed at encouraging employees to create long-term positive changes to their health.

“We are trying to address the stigma by empowering people through our internal ‘My Mind Matters’ program,” explains Ita Waller, HR Director, Unlimited, which is based in London. “By normalizing conversations about mental health we can connect on better levels and inclusive cultures can thrive.”

Waller explains that although this topic has always been a “top priority” for the agency, it’s become essential during COVID-19. “Rather than train a few select people or have mental health ambassadors, we thought let’s train everyone because it’s a skill for life. It’s our way to help staff support each other and look out for each other.”

Unlimited is also partnering with experts in workplace diversity and inclusion to train all staff to understand the nature of unconscious bias and how it impacts individual and group attitudes, behaviors, and decision-making processes.
