Discovery+ Launches On Comcast's Xfinity Flex, Coming On X1 Pay-TV Platform

Discovery+ has launched on Comcast’s Xfinity broadband service, and will also start rolling out on Comcast’s X1 pay-TV platform in coming weeks, the companies announced.

The pay-TV component will give Xfinity TV customers access to more Discovery programming “over the internet, alongside all the live and on-demand content they get as part of their TV subscription,” said Discovery, Inc.

Discovery’s Food Network Kitchen and MotorTrend direct-to-consumer apps have now also launched on Flex and will soon be on X1.

Although programmers’ launches of direct-to-consumer streaming services have caused tensions with distributors, this deal appears to represent a win/win.

The deal should help Comcast — which also recently made Disney+ available on X1 — in its push to enhance its pay-TV offerings in the face of cord-cutting’s acceleration, while providing Discovery with valuable exposure to prospective Discovery+ subscribers.

“The launch of Discovery+ on Xfinity Flex, and very soon on X1, gives our customers access to more of the best entertainment from one of the newest streaming services on the market,” said Rebecca Heap, senior vice president, video and entertainment, Comcast Cable.

“We are thrilled to expand our relationship with our valued partner Comcast to provide their customers with direct and easy access to discovery+ and other applications across their industry-leading entertainment platforms – Xfinity Flex, and soon X1,” stated Gabriel Sauerhoff, senior VP, digital distribution and commercial partnerships at Discovery, Inc.

Discovery+ is available in the U.S. starting at $4.99 per month, with an ad-free version available for $6.99 per month.

The streaming service offers more than 55,000 episodes of current and classic shows from Discovery’s networks, including HGTV, Food Network, TLC, ID, OWN, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and the upcoming Magnolia Network, as well as more than 50 original titles and hundreds of hours of exclusive content.
