Swedish automaker Polestar is allowing prospective customers to trade pieces of their art collection for the electric vehicle.
In collaboration with international art advisor Theodor Dalenson and two of the largest auction houses, Sotheby’s and Philips, Polestar will review and estimate the art. A maximum of three artworks will be allowed for a purchase.
The automaker will eventually sell the art, either via the above auction houses or through the dealers that represent the artists.
All forms of art, including paintings, sculptures, photography, installations, and more are considered as valid payment methods if the value of the art corresponds with the list price of the Polestar 1, which is $155,000.
“It is such a special car and we wanted to find a unique way of celebrating it before its production reaches an end,” says Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, the independent Swedish premium electric performance car brand founded by Volvo Cars and Geely Holding, in a release. “It is hand-built, precious, and tangible, much like a piece of art.”

In April 2021, a special edition Polestar 1 was revealed at the Shanghai auto show, featuring a bespoke matte gold exterior paint job with matching brake calipers, black wheels, and color-matched gold stitching inside.
A maximum of 25 will be built and a handful will be eligible for the initiative, which runs June 10 through Aug. 15 in Europe and North America.
Submissions can be made at polestar.com/art/. The automaker also created a video detailing the unique activation.
