Comcast's Xumo Claims An AVOD First: Ad-Free Movies

The lines between various types of streaming service business models continue to blur.

Xumo, the free, ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) streaming service owned by Comcast, is now offering an “Ad-Free Movie of the Week.”

The streaming platform says that offering ad-free movies is a first among AVODs.

Xumo is launching the ad-free movies today with “Miss Stevens,” a 2016 comedy starring Timothée Chalamet‎, Lily Rabe and Oscar Nunez. The movie will be available through Oct. 10.

Other movies coming including “Hero” (Oct. 11-17) and horror flick “Marrowbone” (Oct. 1-24).

In Xumo tests of the offering in August with Comcast Xfinity X1 users, the ad-free movies increased frequency of use and sessions per user, with viewers reporting a more enjoyable streaming experience, the company told NextTV.

The streaming service says it reaches 24 million unique monthly users.
