Um, Poop Emoji Ice Cream? Really?

Burger King is getting serious about its commitment to natural ingredients -- or so it says -- with a poop emoji ice cream set for release around April 1.

This ad, via David, Sao Paolo, gives a glimpse into the thinking behind the launch. “To remind people it’s free of artificial…” the burger chain states, finishing the thought with a poop emoji. (Note: We realize there’s an excellent chance this is an April Fool’s promo, but we tried to contact both Burger King and David and got no response.)

The ad then points out that all of BK’s ice creams are free of artificial flavors. Recall that BK in 2020 launched the “Moldy Whopper” campaign, which made the same point about the makeup of Burger King’s hamburgers. That campaign pointed out that only a food made with no artificial preservatives could mold up like that.

The previous campaign was somewhat divisive. Ben Tyson of agency Born Social noted that comments were about “75% positive”  -- but, still, most food marketers try to show delicious-looking food, rather than repellent food in the process of decomposing.

At the same time, burger marketers have been trying to entice viewers with their goods for decades, so perhaps a variation on the formula is welcome now.
