Stumptown Coffee, Animation Studio Laika To Release 'Coraline' Cold Brew

Portland, Oregon-based coffee crafter Stumptown Coffee partnered with a fellow hometown hero, the animation studio Laika, for a limited-edition cold brew honoring the 15th anniversary of the studio’s first feature film, “Coraline.”

In 2009, “Coraline” marked the big screen debut for the animation shop formerly known as Will Vinton Studios  – which had been acquired by Nike co-founder Phil Knight in 2002 and in 2005 rebranded to Laika, the name of the dog sent into space by the Soviet Union in 1957.

“Coraline” went on to be a commercial and critical success for Laika, earning $124.6 million at the box office (according to Box Office Mojo), and receiving an Academy Award nomination for best animated feature.

The collaboration arrives as “Coraline” returns to theaters with a limited run in remastered-3D, beginning Aug. 15.

Stumptown Coffee’s “Coraline” is a nitro cold brew released in a commemorative can featuring artwork inspired by the film’s “fantastic garden" scene in which the film’s titular character first passes through a small door in the Victorian house where her family has just moved to find a world of fantasy.

The limited-edition cans will be available at major grocery stores nationwide, while supplies last. Stumptown’s partnership with Laika also includes in-store activations at its Stumptown Cafes in its hometown Portland, Pasadena, and New York City. In-store displays will feature Coraline art galleries, including concept art and other artifacts from the film. These activations will also feature exclusive, hand-crafted Coraline-inspired menu items – such as the “Coraline Coconut Cream Cold Brew” combining Stumptown’s “Original Cold Brew” with coconut cream, topped off with toasted coconut flakes.

The two companies are also releasing a collaborative line of Stumptown Coffee-Coraline merchandise. Available at Stumptown Cafe locations and online, the collection includes mugs, tote bags, and stickers.
