Email's Happening, Now With 4.48B Users Across The Globe

Shopify has entered the email arena, and is presenting what it claims are statistics all email marketers should know in 2025. 

These statistics originated with everyone from Litmus to Statista.

Here are some of the top-of-the-line numbers that it might be useful to review. 

For starters, there are now 4.48 billion email users worldwide. And that total should grow to 4.89 billion by 2027, Shopify says. 

What does that mean to the average email sender? Not much on the face of it, but 87% of marketers say email is critical to their company’s success and 44% add that email is their most effective channel.  

In addition, 14% say email provides the strongest return on investment of any marketing strategy. 

Moreover, 52% of email marketers saw their campaign ROI double between 2022 and 2023, and 5.7% experienced a quadrupling.

Paradoxically, only about a third of marketers are using email. Email takes up 7.8% of the average marketing spend. And 87% plan to increase their email budgets. 

How are marketers doing at it?

The average open rate across all verticals is 36.5%, while retail firms pull 33.1% and tech and transportation services are tied for the highest click-through rate: 2.6%, versus and average of 1.4% for all businesses.
