Publishers Laid Off 900 People In January: Report

Journalistic layoffs are keeping pace YoY.

There were more than 900 layoffs in the U.K. and U.S. in January, the U.K.’s Press Gazette reports.

The number was similar to that of January 2024, although the latter may have been elevated by the decline of the digital news start-up The Messenger that resulted in around 300 job cuts.

This January layoffs occurred at several publishing concerns, including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Dotdash Meredith, BBC World Service, the Mail titles in the U.K., CNN, NBC News and Forbes, Press Gazette writes.

In January, Dotdash Meredith contributed to the total by eliminating 143 jobs.

There also have been digital/TV layoffs, such as the loss of 200 jobs at CNN.
