House Of Jerks: Watching Rich People Sit Around Is No Fun

Robin Wright was one of the stars of “House of Cards,” one of the shows that helped put streaming on the cultural map.

But today, with streaming so firmly established, few shows in the great universe of TV content ever really break out of the pack like that anymore.

Wright’s new show, “The Girlfriend” -- starting on Amazon Prime on Monday -- is a case in point. It is ordinary and dull.

This six-part series tells the story of a young woman who is the girlfriend of the son of very wealthy parents, one of whom is Laura -- the grown son’s doting mom, played by Wright, 59.

In the show, the young woman -- named “Cherry Laine,” if you can believe it -- travels from the U.K. to Spain for an extended stay at the family’s fabulous seaside villa where the amenities include a pool, tennis court and yacht.

The visit represents her first time meeting her boyfriend’s family, and she is ill at ease. She is a working-class woman with no experience in the world of the super-wealthy.

She feels vulnerable and self-conscious, which is understandable because Laura already hates her and stares daggers at her every time she enters a scene. Subtlety is not this show’s strong suit.

Soon it becomes apparent that Laura has such a protective relationship with her only son, Daniel (Laurie Davidson), that it borders on creepy. Laura also believes Cherry is after her son’s money.

As it happens, Daniel is a spoiled, thoughtless jerk who shamelessly flirts with an old flame -- a family friend staying at the house with her mother -- right in front of Cherry.

Soon, however, we learn one reason why Laura clings so tightly to Daniel: Another one of her children, a daughter and Daniel’s sister, died young.

We learn this when Cherry encounters Daniel’s dad, Howard (Waleed Zuaiter), sitting moodily in the young girl’s bedroom, and Cherry moves in close to him in a gesture of sympathy.

It also just so happens that Howard and Laura are at an antagonistic stage in their marriage. With that in mind, is Cherry angling for an affair with Dad?

Will Laura ever learn to keep her creepy hands off her son? Will Daniel rekindle his love affair with the family friend right under Cherry’s nose?

The answer to all of these questions is the same one: Who cares?

“The Girlfriend” starts streaming Monday, September 8, on Amazon Prime Video.
