Google Maps Unveils AI-Powered Driving Aids, Live Lane Guidance

New live lane guidance for cars with Google built-in will make missed highway exits a problem of the past.

For the first time, Google Maps intelligently understands what lane you’re in and tailors guidance accordingly. The AI-powered live lane guidance is available for cars with Google Built-In, starting with Polestar 4. It’ll expand to more road types and cars in partnership with key automakers.

Besides Polestar, the Google built-in is available in vehicles from manufacturers including Acura, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Honda, Infiniti, Lincoln, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Volvo.

So how does it work? Google Maps can “see” the road and its lanes and provide customized, real-time navigation help. So if you’re in the far left lane and your exit is on the right, live lane guidance automatically detects this and uses clear audio and visual cues to remind you to merge in time.

To do this, AI analyzes lane markings as they’re captured by the car’s front-facing camera. The real-time road information is instantly integrated with Google Maps’ navigation. The program will allow automakers to deliver more value to owners by using their vehicles’ existing technology.

Polestar’s five-year collaboration with Google has delivered many features for Polestar owners, says Sid Odedra, Polestar's head of UI/UX (User Interface, User Experience.)

“Live lane guidance continues the path of Polestar’s driver-centric UX strategy, reducing driver stress and improving safety by making missed exits and last-minute lane changes much less of a worry,” Odedra says in a release.

The Polestar 2 was the first car launched with Google built-in, says Andrew Foster, director of product management for Google Maps.

“Now, Polestar 4 will be the first to integrate our groundbreaking live lane guidance which will help people drive with even more confidence and set a new benchmark for navigation across the auto industry,” Foster says.
