The Wall Street Journal Opinion team has created a brand extension that will focus on today’s political and cultural debates.
The new
product, Free Expression, will be a dedicated newsletter with new writers and editors, and a presence on Substack. This expanded offering will build on WSJ Opinion’s 130+ year legacy
as a supporter of free markets.
“What I’m most looking forward to isn't the 'who' but the 'what,' says Matthew Hennessey in a statement, who is deputy editorial
features editor at The Wall Street Journal and will be Free Expression editor and columnist. “We won’t ignore politics and policy. But you’ll be reading
columns and essays on topics broader than you’d typically see in our print pages.”
The new writers include Matthew Continetti, Meghan Cox Gurdon, James B. Meigs, John J.
Miller, Louise Perry, Ben Sasse and Kyle Smith.

Free Expression will be available for free as a newsletter and in a dedicated section on WSJ.com at
launch and for a limited time thereafter. It will then become an expanded paid product, available as an add-on for current WSJ subscribers or bundled with
a WSJ subscription for new subscribers.
In addition, a limited free version of the newsletter will remain available once a week on WSJ.com and on Substack to reach
new audiences.
“I’m excited to expand our Opinion content with new writers, and new audio and video content, that can enhance our value to subscribers, both new and
time-honored,” says Paul A. Gigot, who has served as the Journal’s editorial page editor since 2001.
