Big Break for Video

Imagine viewing videos of your favorite restaurant chef’s top-secret recipes, sharing a homemade video of your son making a winning touchdown with viewers of a local sports Web site, or watching online as your firm’s chief engineer explains how to build the company’s newest product.

Making user-generated content and social networking ubiquitous and relevant across the Web is the goal of Eric Alterman, the CEO of KickApps, a hosted platform that allows any Web site to deploy user-generated video and social networking functionality, including audio, video, photos, and blogs.

The firm’s latest endeavor is Knucklehead Video, a user-generated content site within NationalLampoon.com catering to 18- to 24-year-old men, which launched in September.

“We did a promo for the [Lionsgate] ‘Dorm Daze 2’ DVD release,” says Dan Laikin, CEO of NationalLampoon. “If we had built it ourselves, it would have taken four weeks. With KickApps managing all the content, I think we were up in less than 10 days. Our internal time to manage the site is a fraction of what it would be if we were managing the content ourselves, and we’re saving tens of thousands of dollars on each project.”

Clients include Amaru/ Interscope and Arena Football on the Sports Network.
