Arianna’s Island

Arianna Huffington knows how to use a powerful metaphor to get a point across. But she may have pushed the envelope when she suggested that consumer use of print and online media was akin to a manage a trois. Invoking the classic post-pubescent debate surrounding the characters on “Gilligan’s Island” during her keynote at OMMA Hollywood this morning, Huffington alluded to the choice between girl next door Maryann and exotic Hollywood actress Ginger. Why choose, Huffington suggested, “I say, let’s have a three-way. Maryann and Ginger: Print and new media.” Great analogy, but which medium is Maryann and which one is Ginger? And perhaps most importantly, what other media are represented by characters on “Gilligan’s Island?”
