“Lost” In Translation

Exactly how many people are watching ABC prime-time series “Lost” on their lap-tops right now? “A lot,” according to Disney ABC Television Group VP-Product Design and Development David Watson. Watson was responding to moderator Shelly Palmer’s question, but perhaps Palmer should have directed that question to a different panel member: BitTorrent’s Eric Patterson. Somehow, I have a feeling that all the free, unlicensed downloads of “Lost” on BitTorrent had something to do with Disney’s decision to begin offering the show for download via iTunes, and ultimately streamed via ABC.com. But as they say in the TV biz, “stay tuned.” According to BitTorrent's Patterson, the peer-to-peer network will “Move to an ad-supported model later this year” that will enable online users to watch “Lost” Freely and ad-supported.” Gee, sounds a lot like another medium to me: television.
