Pope Vs. Bikini

To illustrate just how difficult the potential “monetization” of online video may be, Jonathan Miller cited an example that involved AOL, the death of Pope John Paul II, and a bikini.

“Unfortunately, the pope died,” recalled Miller, recalling that when AOL played the news as its lead story, it ran adjacent to a banner ad featuring a bikini-clad woman that upset many AOL users.

“The ability to know those two things â€" that the creative from this company with a woman in a bikini” and news about the pope dying, Miller said, underscores the industry's challenge.

The ability to match those things up, and the ability to have them safe for all the constituents, is not easy. That's why you will see some pains in the monetization stage.”
