Just An Online Minute... JumpTap Takes Manhattan One Burger At A Time

JumpTap Celebrates New Digs, 230 FIFTH, New York
July 18, 2008

Have you ever been to 230 Fifth? I hadn't either, mainly because I try to stay away from places where bottle service isn't necessary, but in order to reserve a table and receive priority, it's strongly suggested. Oh, and champagne starts at $125.00 bucks a bottle, with vodka starting at $250.00. Thanks, but if I want to drink a bottle of voddy while sitting outside, I'll get a 40-dollar bottle of Absolut and sit on my stoop. however, I've heard the Empire State Building is mammoth on the garden roofdeck, so I was super-geeked to receive the JumpTap invitation - a coming-out party, if you will, to the Manhattan scene.

I tweeted my week's schedule and Brian Morrissey, digital editor at Adweek, tweeted an @reply in my direction that he, too would be there. Yay! A tiny JetVegas reunion. He's a good human and I couldn't wait to drill him about Cannes - in a person to person way, not a "I'm going to quote you so choose your words wisely way." I should also point out, for those of you who care (and those who don't), I was sporting some new shoes last night. And by new I mean blister-building torture devices. Now I know why towering Manhattan women are so angry all the time. They HURT. As soon as I met my +1 and we exited the elevator shaft in the rooftop garden, I took those stupid things off, got six inches shorter, and was happy in flipflops.

The girls at the check in table (women, they're women) greeting us were smiling and refreshingly upbeat in the ridiculous top-of-the-building humidity. We dropped our cards in the raffle jar (yay! eligible!), and off we went, in search of burgers and bevies. I was happy to see that the area wasn't as clogged with hob-nobbers as some of the other quaffing quarantines. I swear, I have never been to this place, and I have never seen so many little signs for agency corrals. I momentarily forgot what party I was there for in the midst of all that. Anyway, where was I? Oh, beverages! And confusion! We grabbed champagne, which was served in these wonky old scratched up stinky plastic flutes. I get the plastic, I heard more than a dozen splashes of dropped drinks (I was one, with my wild hand gestures -- my dress smells awful), but at least replace the fishtank-smelling ones.

The PR team was helpful, with Julie Ginches ushering me all over the place, introducing me to all kinds of people - like the very funny and slightly goofy Chip Canter, vice president mobile & interactive distribution. NBC. We snarked about working for large companies and hearing the "do you know Scriggle from Peoria?" question. We also invented a few facebook apps while trying to top each other with offensive cleverness. Who else was there? Oh, Enid Burns from ClickZ was hanging out with Jennifer Drury, senior editor at Alloy Media and Marketing, and a red-shirted guest without a business card. I told him he'd be captioned as "and guest" because of that.

Some low lights, or should I say dim bulbs, of the evening were not at the hands of JumpTap. Nope, the hands were covered in beer and burger sweat and belonged to a gaggle of fellows allegedly (I say allegedly because I know for a fact that someone was there posing as media, but not as they appeared) from HSBC. They gave me their cards, but I can't assume the cards were theirs. Drama, I know!

And finally, between the palm trees and the vicious yet almost refreshing wind, I spotted this chic little thing with a great haircut, Megan O'Farrell, currently in between dreams, with Drew Pitts, senior director of ImpactMobile (tagline": own the street). Drew took a moment to show me the publishing tool he had on his mobile device, avoiding brand specifics. That always cracks me up. I wish them tons of luck, they are fresh and funny, and sharp-meloned.
