TiVo, RIM Collaborate On Slingbox-Like App

  • September 11, 2008
TiVo and Research In Motion (RIM), parent company of BlackBerry, have partnered to develop an application that will let BlackBerry owners control their TiVo digital video recorders (DVRs) while they're on the go.

"TiVo subscribers will soon be able to wirelessly control their TiVo DVRs using a BlackBerry smartphone," said Jim Balsillie, Research In Motion's co-CEO. "And that is a powerful example of how our respective technologies can complement each other to serve our mutual customers."

The application is similar to Slingbox, which allows users to control and view content from their home TV on a PC in another location. Its first iteration, however, will only let BlackBerry users view their listings and schedule recordings. TiVo and RIM are set to launch the app later this year, and future versions will likely be capable of displaying the recorded content as well.--Tameka Kee
