Calderone Hits High Note: VH1 President

Tom Calderone of VH1MTV Networks has promoted Tom Calderone to president of its VH1 network. The executive had led the network for the past three years as executive vice president and general manager.

The role includes oversight of all on-air and online network extensions: VH1, VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul and VH1.com. He is also the head of MTVN's recently rebranded Palladia, a high-def music network. Currently, it is in 12 million homes and seems to have extensive growth opportunities with cable, telco and satellite providers hungry to add as many HD offerings as possible.

Calderone is based in New York and reports to Van Toffler, who heads MTVN's Music and Logo Group. Toffler says Calderone has "an encyclopedic knowledge of music and great instincts in identifying the next cultural phenomenon."

Calderone has been at MTVN since 1998, when he started in music programming at MTV. His roots are in the music industry; in a previous post, he advised radio stations on strategy.

VH1 has high-profile music programming, such as the annual "Rock Honors," which Calderone helped launch. The network has also become known for its so-called "celeb-reality" series.

The company says that under his leadership, VH1 posted 23 consecutive quarters of growth among total viewers, with the first quarter of 2008 marking the network's highest-rated period among 18-49 viewers.
