The Nielsen Co., the parent of Nielsen Online, Nielsen Media Research, and a variety of other media and marketing research services, this morning reported a 7% decline in revenues for the first
quarter of 2009. The company said total reported revenues fell to $1.133 billion vs. $1.214 billion in the first quarter of 2008, but that after adjusting for the impact of "currency fluctuations,"
revenues for the period actually increased 1%.
Reported operating income for the quarter was $109 million compared with $115 million in the first quarter of 2008.
These results were
negatively impacted by $5 million and $7 million, respectively, of charges relating to restructuring costs. Excluding the impact of those restructuring charges, and the affect of currency
fluctuations, Nielsen said its operating income would have increased 1% for the quarter.
