Magna: DVR, Online Steadily Rise

Even without a governmental plan to grow the broadband online business, a recent estimate says Internet access will grow 30% to just over 100 million U.S. households in six years.

According to Mediabrands' Magna media research unit, online access will steadily rise from the 77.6 million homes that had access at the end of 2009.

Its estimates are independent of the Federal Communications Commission's just-announced National Broadband Plan.

In a report written by Brian Wieser, global forecasting of Magna, he says growth will occur "as a consequence of pre-existing competition and increased availability of triple-play services and tiered broadband services, which have the effect of lowering pricing for many consumers."

DVR homes will also continue to rise quickly -- soaring to 54.6 million (44% of TV homes) from 34.5 million (30% of TV homes) at the end of 2009.

But the impact of DVRs will be less, says Wieser, as DVRs will be outpaced by a rising population and increases in "conventional TV" consumption.

Magna's estimates for video on demand (VOD services will reach 65 million homes (53% of television households) compared with 47.3 million VOD homes (41% of TV homes) at the end of 2009.
