X, Visa Launch Payments App For U.S. Subscribers

Paid X subscribers based in the United States now have access to “X Money,” Elon Musk's standalone money transferring app – a notable step in the development of a burgeoning “everything app” ecosystem.

Reminiscent of the 1999 online banking start-up X.com, which became the global platform PayPal, X Money was initially expected to launch by the end of 2024 after X secured its first licenses to enable funds transfers in the app.

At the start of 2025, X announced a partnership with Visa.

Now, X Money has finally become available to Premium and Premium+ X subscribers based in the U.S. The app is designed for users to pay their rent, send wire transfers, pay friends and more.

Per the partnership with Visa, subscribers will receive a physical X Visa debit card they can add to their Apple Pay hub and use to make free withdrawals at ATMs across the globe.

Introducing money-transferring capabilities marks X's desired alignment with China’s popular WeChat platform, on which billions of people can grocery shop, text, video conference, play video games, make digital payments and more.

“If you're in China, you kind of live on WeChat,” Musk has said in the past. “It does everything -- sort of like Twitter, plus PayPal, plus a whole bunch of things, and all rolled into one, with a great interface. It's really an excellent app, and we don't have anything like that outside of China.”

Soon after taking over Twitter in 2022, Musk mentioned his plans to transform the established social platform into an “everything app” like WeChat, with former X CEO Linda Yaccarino relaying the company’s goal of fostering “unlimited interactivity -- centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking.”

In addition to X Money, X rolled out “X Chat” in April, a stand-alone, free, end-to-end encrypted private messaging app accessible with users' X account login information.

The launch of X Money may also help X better incentivize users to pay for a premium subscription, an offering that currently consists of about 0.21 percent of the platform’s total user base.

With an X Money account, Premium and Premium+ subscribers are eligible for various perks, including cash back and early access to direct deposits.
