Today's The Day: Apple Said To Plan All Sorts Of Things

Nothing, it seems, stirs up the rumormongers more than a scheduled Apple event, and today's the day for Steve Jobs' here-comes-the-autumn-so-get-out-your-credit-card extravaganza.

Ronald Grover and Peter Burrows report that Apple will unveil a new version of Apple TV that delivers video to consumers' TVs and will include streaming programming from Netflix. Users will pay a subscription fee for the service, according to sources.

Fast Company's Kit Eaton, meanwhile, speculates that some of the whiz-bang features introduced into the iPhone 4 will migrate over to a new iPod Touch. He also says that the Nano is "pretty certain to get a serious refresh" and predicts that the iPod Classic will retire to the back porch where the Sony Walkman CD Player wiles away the hours listening to disco. Apple may also launch a new version of iTunes with all sorts of possible new diversions. We should also re-report Eatons's re-reports about the rumor that a 7-inch iPad may be unveiled.

Meanwhile, up in Seattle, Amazon is said to be talking with media companies about its plans to start an online video subscription service to rival Netflix, Sarah Rabil, Andy Fixmer and Joseph Galante report in Bloomberg. The service would consist of older films and TV shows, sources tell them, and the while shebang is in its early stages and could easily unravel.
