Election Night Winner: Fox News' Ratings

CNN-Roundtable

Fox News had a performance Tuesday resembling the Republican Party in House races. The network trounced CNN and MSNBC in prime-time election coverage. That may be partly due to the fact the network was on the winning team. They also offered, per New York magazine, some "splashier" commentators.

Sarah Palin, who endorsed several candidates, weighed in, as did Karl Rove, no stranger to election strategies.

Fox posted 136% higher ratings in the key 25-to-54 demo over second-place CNN, in the 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. time frame. Among total viewers, Fox's 187% margin was even greater over CNN, according to official national ratings.

The News Corp.-owned network drew an average of 2.43 million 25- to-54-year-olds, considered the key news demo. That compared to 1.03 million for CNN. In viewers, Fox had an average of 6.96 million compared to CNN's 2.42 million.

MSNBC was in third place in prime time with a 669,000 average in the 25-to-54 demo and 1.95 million viewers.

In total-day ratings, which included 12 hours of programming before election returns started to come in, Fox also dominated, by 153% over CNN in the 25-to-54 demo and 208% in viewers. MSNBC was third, with CNN 28% ahead of it in the demo and by 17% in viewers.

CNN had too many participants. Someone should have told half the commentators to stay home.
