History Pop-Up Store Pitches Channel, Series Debuts

Pop-up-Store

With pop-up stores becoming an increasingly popular marketing technique, the History channel debuts one next week in Manhattan. Erected for one month as holiday foot traffic reaches a peak, it's located in the heart of Times Square.

The network is using the "History Pop Shop" to back its "Pawn Stars" and "American Pickers" series as new episodes debut.

Merchandise -- T-shirts, mugs, bobble-heads -- will be on sale; there are also opportunities to win items that may have been featured in the show. Examples: Muhammad Ali trading cards and an English World War I sword from "Pawn Stars." a silk Japanese smoking jacket, Civil War drum, courtesy of "American Pickers."

The store, opening Monday, will also feature touchscreen monitors that offer the chance to guess prices that led to deals in episodes of the shows. Screens will run footage, or offer images from the shows.

"Pawn Stars" follows life at a pawn shop in the Vegas area run by three generations of a family. Each member tries to determine the value of items, from Samurai swords to Super Bowl rings. "Pickers" follows a duo traveling the country in search of discarded antiques they can restore to former glory.

Procter & Gamble will also have a pop-up venture in Times Square this holiday season. For the fifth year in a row, it has offered public toilets sponsored by Charmin.
