CBS To Stream College Basketball Online, Mobile

CollegeHoops

CBS Sports will again simulcast a run of college hoops games gratis on the Web and mobile devices, while adding a social-media component. A series of live games from three conferences -- highlighted by Kentucky-Louisville and the Big Ten championship - will be available.

The conferences with a combined 20-plus games on "College Basketball Live" are the SEC, Big East and Big Ten. The games will appear on the CBS network while they are also fed to the Web (CBSSports.com) and mobile options.

One addition in 2010-11 is the opportunity to pop a message on a Facebook page during the game about team preference, which also contains a link to the stream.

During football season, CBS simulcasts SEC games; since 2003, the network has been providing the NCAA basketball tournament. The March Madness games are expected to be available free (as they have been since 2006) on CBSSports.com, although Turner will manage the production as a new partner with CBS.

"College Basketball Live" and the SEC games have a feature with in-game statistics and a score tracker of other games. The games can be accessed by mobile users via a CBS Sports iPhone app.

The growth of CBS' March Madness on Demand has greatly outperformed the on-air broadcast, albeit starting from a lower base. This year, there were 8.3 million unique visitors, up from about 4.8 million in 2008.

So I'm confused - are the March Madness games going to be broadcast through the CBS iPhone app? Or just a scoretracker?

Broadcasting the actual games through the app would be quite an impressive step for CBS, who's Football app is pretty minimal and often frustrating to work with.

Hopefully this improvement for March Madness means the other apps will get some love :)
