DirecTV Has 'Gone' Surfing

DirecTV's dedicated 24/7 3D channel will launch a series focusing on the pro female surfing circuit as it looks to expand programming in the 3D format. Some have suggested a lack of content has hurt consumer interest in purchasing 3D-compatible sets. The series "Gone Until December" is scheduled for this summer and promises to go behind-the-scenes with competitive surfers as they endure trials and tribulations. An arm of Union Square Agency will produce it.

DirecTV's n3D, sponsored by Panasonic, is programmed by the satellite provider and is free to HD customers. DirecTV also offers ESPN's 3D network and the 3D network from Discovery, Sony and IMAX.

Like HD, sports and nature -- and movies -- are viewed as offering compelling 3D content. The surfing series looks to offer shots of spectacular surfing settings.

"Viewers will experience the beauty of nature and the drama that unfolds as the competitive instincts of these young women drive them to display true human emotions within their very tight-knit group," Union Square Agency said.

The n3D channel offers an array of programming, from sports to "Guitar Center Sessions" to WNET's show examining some of Britain's historical estates. (WNET is the PBS outlet in New York City.)

"This is the first time that WNET has collaborated on a project shot in 3D, which showcases public media's continued journey toward the future of television programming," stated Neal Shapiro, WNET's CEO.
