Function(x) said Wednesday it plans to launch Viggle, a free loyalty program for TV that gives people rewards, such as gift cards, movie tickets and music, for checking in to the TV shows they watch through an app. It becomes available for iOS devices within the next few weeks, followed by versions for Android, iPad and the Web.
A built in microphone in the smartphone captures an audio sample of the show, similar to Shazam and converts it into a digital footprint. Brands can offer viewers opportunities to earn extra Viggle points for checking in to commercials or engaging with branded quizzes, games, videos and polls within the app. Viggle also helps TV networks engage their existing audiences and attract new viewers by driving awareness for programming.
