Florio To Advanstar Fashion Group CEO

Tom-Florio

Former Vogue publisher Tom Florio is joining B2B publisher and events producer Advanstar as CEO of its new fashion group, where he will oversee Magic, the largest apparel trade show in the U.S., held annually in Las Vegas.

Florio, who was Condé Nast vice president and publisher of Vogue from 2002-2009, previously served as publisher of Condé Nast Traveler and GQ. More recently, heworked as a consultant to IMG.

During his tenure at Vogue, the venerable fashion title broke records for ad pages and revenue, and achieved unprecedented publicity (not always positive) as the subject of movies. including "The September Issue" and "The Devil Wears Prada," which took Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour as the thinly veiled model for its antagonist.

Florio’s older brother Steven Florio was president and CEO of Condé Nast from 1994-2004, where he was famed for his outsized personality and blunt management style. He passed away from a heart attack in December 2007 at the age of 58.

Overall, Advanstar (which also includes a number of health care and automotive-focused divisions) says it produces 143 events, 54 publications and directories, and 253 electronic products and Web sites across all its categories. The annual Magic trade show claims it attracts 60,000 attendees, including representatives from over 5,000 fashion brands worldwide.

Florio isn’t the first high-ranking Condé Nast executive to transition to B2B publishing.

In March 2009 Condé Nast Media Group boss Richard Beckman moved to the company’s B2B unit, the Fairchild Fashion Group, which publishes trade titles including Women’s Wear Daily, before leaving in January 2010 to become CEO of e5 Global Media, which owns Adweek, Mediaweek, Brandweek, The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard.
