Updated LinkedIn App Has In-Stream Ads

The latest version of LinkedIn's app for the iPhone and Android phones will allow marketers to run ads on smartphones for the first time. A spokesperson for the company told Reuters on Thursday that the app will begin showing ads in the app’s news stream as part of a limited test.

The reva mped app is meant to provide a more streamlined experience that makes it easier for users to interact with content via “liking” and commenting features directly in the more visually-focused stream. It also offers more options for customizing features through  a new navigation page users access by swiping across on the home page.

With nearly two-thirds of its users outside the U.S., LinkedIn also expanded the available languages for the iPhone and Android apps to 15, adding Dutch, Norwegian, and Turkish. Like many other sites, LinkedIn has also seen a growing shift in usage toward mobile devices. The company says 27% of its traffic comes from mobile, up from 15% a year ago.

To help monetize rising mobile traffic, LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner in February said the professional networking site had begun testing sponsored content in the news stream with a handful of ad partners on both the desktop and iPad, with smartphones to follow.
