Pinterest on Thursday unveiled a revamped mobile Web site aimed at expanding into international markets where users may not be able to access its mobile app.
The updated version of Pinterest.com on mobile phones has a cleaner look and feel, while offering the same features, such as more useful pins and related pins, found on the desktop site and app. The company’s iPhone app sets a high bar, with a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars in the App Store, based on 853,703 ratings.
But the new mobile site is about reach, as well as
offering a refreshed design.
“As we launch in new countries around the world, we want to make it easy for everyone to access Pinterest—no matter where you are or what device
you’re using. That’s why we recently updated our mobile Web site,” stated a Pinterest blog post today.
Pinterest is now available in 22 languages, reflecting its push last year into various countries, including Japan, Italy, France and the U.K. Last month, the social network that lets users pin product or other photos to virtual pinboards, announced its launch in Indonesia.
According to a TechCrunch report Thursday, three-quarters of all daily traffic to Pinterest comes through its native apps. But in emerging markets where users may be less likely to browse the mobile Web than download apps, providing an upgraded alternative makes sense. Given the image-heavy content of Pinterest pages, users abroad could face slow load times depending on the quality of their wireless connection.
In its blog post, Pinterest also indicated that more mobile updates are coming in the next few months.
