'Thrones' Reigns For HBO, 'Mad Men' Hits 2.3M For Series Return

Another busy Sunday night on TV had HBO’s “Game of Thrones” scoring another big viewing number, coupled with lower general overall broadcast network programming results.

CBS lost ground with “The Amazing Race” (down 15% last week) to a Nielsen preliminary 1.7 rating/5 share among 18-49 viewers and “The Good Wife” (off 17% from the week before) to a 1.5/4.  CBS had to deal with unfavorable comparisons versus the week before, when it had the “Academy of Country Music Awards,” which earned a healthy 3.3/9.

For Sunday overall, CBS was at 1.7/5, down over a full rating point from a 2.8/8.

Second-place ABC also slipped -- down one-tenth of a rating point to a 1.6/5 from a 1.7/5. ABC’s best “Once Upon A Time” lost 20% versus the week before to a 1.9/5; “Resurrection” moved nearly 10% lower to 2.0/5.

Fox was also down -- two-tenths of one percent to a 1.3/4 from a 2.4 rating the week before. Its best-rated show, “Family Guy,” settled at a 2.1/6 from a 2.3 rating the week before. Fox’ special series, “Cosmos” lowered to a 1.2/3 from a 1.5 rating the week before.

NBC was next, doing slightly better among 18-49ers -- a 0.9/3 versus a 0.8/3. Univision was down to a 0.7/2 from a 0.8/2.

HBO’s big “Game of Thrones” posted a big 6.3 million viewers -- second-most-ever behind its season premiere the week before, with a 6.6 million. HBO’s new show “Silicon Valley” pulled 1.7 million viewers for its second episode.

The seventh season of AMC’s “Mad Men” got to 2.3 million viewers, down 32% from 3.4 million for the season six premiere. It was the lowest-rated season premiere since season two, back in 2008.

Virtually all broadcast networks had lower viewership -- CBS was at 9.7 million against 13.1 million; ABC, at 6.0 million from 6.3 million; Fox, 3.2 million against 3.7 million; NBC slightly higher, 3.96 million from 3.91 million; and Univision at 2.097 million from 2.10 million.

Don't forget that only about 30% of Mad Men's audience is live. So when Live+7 data is available, its audience will be much bigger.
