McCann Appoints 'Dumb Ways To Die' Creative To Global ECD Post

In its latest bid to strengthen the agency’s creative leadership,  McCann has appointed John Mescall to the new role of Global Executive Creative Director. Mescall is currently Executive Creative Director of McCann Australia, a position he has held since October 2011. He will relocate to New York to take on the new assignment, and will report to McCann Worldgroup Global Creative Chairman Rob Reilly.

The move follows the appointments earlier this month of a pair of Ogilvy creatives--James Dawson-Hollis and Bill Wright--to Global Executive Creative Director posts. Those two executives also report to Reilly.

A writer and creative director, Mescall has won more than 30 Cannes Lions, including 5 Grand Prix for Metro Trains “Dumb Ways to Die,” the most awarded campaign at the 2013 Cannes Lions. This week in Cannes he won a Grand Prix for Creative Effectiveness for V/Line. He’s won numerous other awards as well.

“John’s all talent and no ego and he has helped lead McCann Australia to become one of the best agencies in the world,” said Reilly. “ John now has the opportunity to magnify what he does on a global stage. I am certain that John’s reputation for delivering stellar work will be a magnet for recruiting the best and brightest to McCann.”

Prior to joining McCann, Mescall was Partner and Executive Creative Director of Australian independent shop SMART which was acquired by McCann Worldgroup in 2011.

I'm happy for this guy. McCann made a bold move elevating him to the Global spot, and he seems very deserving of the role.
