CBS' 'Extant' Has Modest Debut

CBS’ second piece of its big original scripted programming effort this summer -- “Extant” -- offered up a modest performance for its premiere.

The high-profile 9 p.m. action-adventure drama starring Halle Berry posted a Nielsen 1.6 rating/6 share and 9.6 million overall viewers. That last statistic gave the show the best numbers of any show on Wednesday night.

But among 18-49 viewers, it was CBS’ sturdy reality show “Big Brother” at 8 p.m. that took top honors for the best results on Wednesday, with a 1.9/7.

Both shows ran amid a mix of reruns and originals on the night. After “Brother” and “Extant,” it was a rerun of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” at 8 p.m. that grabbed third place with a 1.5/5.

Fox’s two-hour “So You Think You Can Dance” posted a 1.2/4 -- also at 8 p.m.

Later in the evening at 10 p.m., other original summer efforts NBC’s “Taxi Brooklyn” and ABC’s “Motive” earned a 1.0/3 and 0.8/3 respectively -- both even with their week-ago results.

CBS launched “Under The Dome,” the second season for the original drama, which earned a 2.1 rating/7 share for its first episode (June 30) and a 1.7 rating/5 share for its second episode (July 7).

For Wednesday night, CBS was at a Nielsen preliminary 1.6/6 among 18-49 viewers (7.3 million overall viewers); NBC, a 1.3/5 (5.5 million viewers); Fox, 1.2/4 (3.7 million viewers); Univision, 1.2/4 (2.9 million viewers; ABC, 1.0/3 (3.8 million viewers); CW, 0.3/1 (792,000 viewers).
