Media Stocks Dip, 21st Century Fox Hit Hardest

Big and small media stocks were not immune from steeply declining stock markets indices that fell anywhere from 1.5% to nearly 2% on Thursday.

21st Century Fox slipped the most of the big traditional media companies -- 2.1% to $32.77. CBS was down 1.8%, to close at 53.86; Comcast fell 1.7% to $53.94; Viacom sank 1.5% to $76.97; Time Warner dipped 1.1% to $75.35; and Walt Disney lost 1.5% to $88.09.

Big digital-based companies also took their lumps: Google was down 2.2% to $585.25; Facebook shed 1.7% to $77.22; and Twitter gave up 2.9% to $51.43.

Discovery Communications fared the best of the worst -- just off 0.1% to $38.08.

TV station groups witnessed some wide swings. Sinclair Broadcast Group was 2% higher to $26.19, while Media General fell 4.2% to $13.39. Tribune Media was down 0.4% to $68.50.

DirecTV lost 0.5% to $86.39 and Dish Network dropped 0.8% to $63.47. Cablevision Systems Corp. sank 1.2% to $17.84, while Charter Communications slipped 0.4% to $154.53.

Dow Jones Industrials lost 1.5%, or 264 points, to 16,945.80; S&P 500 fell 1.6%, 32.31 points to 1965.99; and the NASDAQ gave up over 1.9%, 88.47 points, to 4,466.75.
