First-quarter
2015 cable news networks continued their current trends: CNN up, MSNBC way down and industry leader Fox News about the same versus the same period a year ago.
CNN grew decisively in all key
categories, up 22% in total daytime viewers to average a Nielsen live program-plus-same day 466,000, as well as 20% higher among 25-54 viewers -- key TV advertising news watchers -- to 147,000.
CNN fared well in the prime-time period from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. -- 11% higher to 538,000 total viewers, and 12% more among 25- to-54-year-olds to 184,000.
On the flip side, struggling MSNBC
continues to see poor rating news: Down 20% in total day viewers to 316,000, and off 38% among 25-54 viewers to 85,000. Prime-time viewing went in the same direction: 545,000 total viewers, down 21%;
and 25-54 viewers at 130,000, losing a big 39%.
Still, dominant cable news leader Fox News Channel remained consistent. Total daytime viewers slipped a bit -- down 3% to 1.07 million viewers,
with 25-54 viewers off 7% to 209,000.
Fox News Channel also slipped 3% in total average prime-time viewers to 1.7 million. But it rose 9% in the key 25-54 viewers that TV marketers desire to
306,000.
