Proofpoint Unveils New Email Security Features For SMBs

Proofpoint, Inc., a cybersecurity company, announced an updated suite of security products today for small- and medium- size businesses that includes email cyber-attack protection.

Today’s updated version of Proofpoint Essentials adds social media protection, email attachment defense and automated policy-based email encryption to the cloud-based platform.

Proofpoint claims that large companies of 150 employees or more are, on average, targeted by cybercriminals once a month.

Symantec’s 2015 Internet Security Threat Report reported that attacks on large companies in 2014 increased by 40%. Some 60% of all cyber attacks in 2014, however, targeted small- and medium-size organizations.

82% of IT Managers expect a cyber attack in 2015, according to the State of Cybersecurity: Implications for 2015 report by ISACA and RSA Conference. 77% of the 649 IT Managers surveyed said they saw an increase in attacks in 2014.

Proofpoint’s new product update includes two features that help protect emails from being hacked: encryption and malicious attachment threat protection. The company says emails defined as containing sensitive data are automatically encrypted to help prevent data theft.

The attachment defense tool uses sandbox technology to detect, identify and block targeted email attacks with malicious attachments, such as Hillary Clinton’s 2011 spoofing attempt

The cybersecurity company states these types of attachment-based attacks are on the rise and “are often used in spear-phishing attacks, to deliver banking Trojans, ransomware or other malware.”
