'People' Launches E-Commerce Hub

Advertising has long been the mainstay of the media business, but more big publishers are looking to cash in on their audiences and editorial expertise by selling products and services themselves.

Time Inc.’s People has joined the list of publishers getting into the e-commerce business with the launch of People Shop, an online retail hub focused on home and lifestyle products and accessories, all inspired by the celebrity universe.

People Shop is launching with 18 brand partners, which are collaborating with the publication to showcase products like Frends headphones, Julep eyeshadows, Quay sunglasses and Baublebar jewelry.

The hub also features rotating mini-boutiques aligned with People’s main content verticals, including “Live Like a Royal,” inspired by Britain’s most famous family, Pet Shop, an Under $25 store, and What We’re Loving, highlight favorite picks from People’s editors.

The e-commerce hub also has a charity section, “For a Good Cause,” that will highlight and solicit donations a different cause every month, beginning with The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month during October. For the BCRF partnership People is spotlighting products from Alex and Ani, Nest Fragrances, and Conair, which all support BCRF.

People Shop is launching with an introductory offer of 10% off the first order.

This is just one in a series of planned or current e-commerce initiatives from Time Inc. publications. Earlier this week, as part of a larger overhaul of the Food & Wine site, the epicurean title announced that all of its recipes are now available through a partnership with Chicory, a service that offers home grocery delivery from stores in the user’s area. The Chicory partnership adds to F&W’s existing partnership with Drizly, which focuses on home delivery of alcoholic beverages.

In September, Travel + Leisure unveiled an e-commerce program created through a new partnership with Black Tomato, offering well-heeled travelers luxurious, experience-focused vacations.

Your visual is not the correct People Shop -- I think that is an Italian fashion site -- not People Magazine's new site.
