IPG Wins Wimbledon

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC), primarily known as the host of the Wimbledon championship tennis tournament, has appointed Interpublic Group as its new marketing partner.

The appointment came after a review that began in May.

A group of IPG shops, led by McCann London, have been tasked with boosting the Wimbledon brand in multiple markets. The Wimbledon championship tournament claims to reach a global audience of more than 1 billion people.

In addition to McCann London, IPG agencies that will work on the account include sports and entertainment marketing firm Octagon and media agency UM.

WME/IMG will continue to act as the AELTC’s exclusive commercial agent.

Mick Desmond, commercial and media director at the AELTC, said that throughout the process “the IPG team worked with us as partners, demonstrating skill, commitment and insight in solving our challenges. Our objective is to enhance the strength of the Wimbledon brand worldwide, and we are confident that IPG is the right partner for that task.”

Mark Lund, CEO at McCann Worldgroup UK, said the IPG team’s work for the client will be to “help build the future and protect the legacy while helping to develop a globally significant superbrand in a sympathetic and commercially astute way.”
