It’s now clear that Google is going to keep throwing social services against the wall until one finally sticks. Its latest fling is Spaces -- an app that encourages group discussions about particular topics.

Yes, it sounds a lot like Google+, Google’s failed attempt to outfox Facebook by giving people a more intimate and focused social experience. Actually, the concept resembles countess other ventures I’ve watched fail to achieve traction over the past 10 years or so.

That’s not to say consumers couldn’t use more personalized social platforms. As users have seen their list of “friends” balloon over the years, Facebook is well aware that relevance rates have suffered. In fact, that’s precisely why people are sharing less personal content these days. 

The challenge for Google is convincing people to use its particular solution -- and, to date, it hasn’t had much luck in that area.

Given its vast resources, it only seems like a matter of time before one of Google’s efforts hits the mark with users.

And, at least in theory, Spaces should make it easier to find content because Google Search, YouTube, and Chrome are built directly into the app.

Whether or not consumers like what Wroblewski and his team have come up with remains to be seen.
