McCann Adds A Voice Against Teen Pregnancy

With the help of its agency McCann Lima, Save The Children Peru is confronting the issue of teen pregnancy by using the subjects of math and language to soften the message and engage Peruvians.

In Peru, 15 out of 100 girls under the age of 18 become mothers, or are currently pregnant, according to The United Nations Fund for Populations (UNFPA). Clleges and universities do not provide any courses that address these matters.

The pro-bono McCann Lima work includes a website that classifies the education in two age groups: ages 8-10 and over age 11. Each presents 16 problems — 10 math and 6 verbal/language — designed to be simple exercises that parents can use to engage with their children’s sexual education.

One question aimed at younger children, for instance, states that it takes 12 years in education to become a doctor, however, having a child lengthens this time frame by three. So how long would it then take Paula to become a doctor?

The site is supported by social-media initiatives, public relations and other online platforms. One online video features a young girl — an actress, made up to look hugely pregnant — who interviews people on the street about the worst problems in Peru; none of the citizens mention teenage pregnancy.

Last year, the two companies collaborated on the #HablaPorEllos (#speakforthem) campaign that raised awareness for child abuse.
