CW Unveils New 'Dynasty,' Pitches Appeal To Young Viewers

A modern-day “Dynasty” is one of two new shows the CW announced for the fall season at its upfront presentation Thursday in New York.

CW’s new “Dynasty” will have an all-new cast – headed by Grant Show – playing a new generation of ultra-rich Carringtons locked in an ongoing battle for wealth and power with each other. Elizabeth Gillies and Nathalie Kelley (photo, left and right) also star.

The event brought an end to upfront week and the entire upfront presentation season, which began March 2 with Nickelodeon.

The mini-network’s other new fall show is “Valor,” a military drama set in the world of special ops. CW also announced two new midseason shows -- “Life Sentence,” about a young woman who gets a new lease on life when she learns she has beaten cancer; and “Black Lightning,” a superhero drama about a vigilante in the inner-city who draws his power from electricity.

The network announced it will move a number of its current shows to new time periods, part of a significant revamp of its 10-hour prime-time slate (8-10 p.m., Monday through Friday) next fall (schedule below). Among the changes: “Jane the Virgin” and “My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” are moving to Fridays.

At its upfront, Rob Tuck, CW’s EVP of national ad sales, and Mark Pedowitz, CW president, emphasized CW’s broad appeal across platforms, particularly on digital, due mainly to the network’s appeal among younger viewers.

“From the CW’s inception, we have made our content available to viewers everywhere they want to watch it, across the full 360 CW environment,” Pedowitz said, making his pitch to ad reps.

“Whether it’s over the air or on DVR, VOD, Roku, Apple TV, phone, tablet, you name it, they can find the CW. … On every platform, the CW has the youngest median age of any broadcast network – on-air, 45 years-old; on VOD, 34; and on digital, just 26 years old.”

The CW gives advertisers “one-stop shopping for all of your video investment needs,” Pedowitz said.
