Cable Nets Continue Viewing Gains, MSNBC Up 63% In Prime Time

Fox News Channel continued to see small viewing gains in August -- but competitors MSNBC and CNN are closing the gap with big improvements.

Fox News was the top overall cable network -- in prime time and total day viewing -- posting 6% gains (to a Nielsen 2.2 million viewers) and 7% gains (to 1.3 million viewers), respectively.

MSNBC came in at second place in prime time, easily notching the best gains among all cable news networks. It was up a massive 63% in prime time (to 1.8 million viewers) and was 54% higher in total day viewing -- third place overall -- to 1 million.

CNN also scored big gains -- with 41% up in prime time to 1.2 million viewers, it was in sixth place overall among all cable TV networks and 22% higher in total day viewing to 832,000 viewers.

NBCUniversal’s business channel, CNBC, scored 310,000 prime-time viewers and 131,000 total day viewers, while 21st Century Fox’s Fox Business had 102,000 prime-time viewers and 118,000 total day viewers. 

Fox Business posted higher viewing results than CNBC in total Monday to Friday viewers, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
