Netflix Scores Highest In Popularity, CBS Is Better With 35+ Demos, Study Finds

When a study asked respondents “if they could only keep a limited number” of services, Netflix led in popularity. CBS also ranked high -- especially for specific viewers.

Among all consumers, 44% picked Netflix if they could only keep a limited number of platforms, according to Hub Entertainment Research. CBS, NBC, and ABC were next, with 29%, 28%, and 28% scores, respectively. ESPN was at 24%.

When it comes to older viewers -- 35 years and older -- CBS garnered the best results, at 41%. This was followed by ABC and NBC, each with 37%. After these three traditional TV brands, Netflix came in at 35%, followed by Fox, with 29%.

Among younger consumers 18-34, Netflix pulled in the strongest results -- at 59%. Hulu came in second at 26%, followed by ESPN with 24%; HBO at 17%; and Amazon with 17%.

None of the traditional TV brands are in the top five.

When it comes to shows promoted as “original,” 69% of viewers 16-34 say this means a lot (22%) or a little (47%) in terms of being more interested in viewing the show. Research indicates that “original” branding is strong with Netflix.

Hub’s research comes from 1,692 U.S. consumers with broadband who watch at least one hour of TV per week, and was collected in January 2019.
