59 Million PCs Ship, Down 3% For Quarter: IDC

The global market for PCs declined 3% for the first quarter compared to a year ago, according to new research from the International Data Corporation (IDC).

Worldwide shipments of desktops, notebooks and workstations reached 59 million units in the quarter.

The leading supplier for the quarter was HP, with 14 million traditional PCs shipped. Lenovo, shipping 13 million devices, was in second place followed by Dell (10 million), Apple (4 million) and Acer Group (4 million).

HP and Lenovo each accounted for 23% market share, with Dell at 18%, Apple 7% and Acer Group 6%.

"Desktop PCs were surprisingly resilient as the commercial segment helped drive a refresh during the quarter," stated Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC. "Capitalizing on this refresh cycle, the top vendors – HP, Lenovo, and Dell – each increased their year-over-year volume and captured additional share in the desktop PC market."
