The National Hockey League is expanding the number of categories from 10 to 20 as it opens the voting for the 2019 NHL Fan Choice Awards.
The event, which is handled in-house at the NHL, gives fans the opportunity to engage with and vote on the best photos, videos and GIFs shared by teams and players during the 2018-19 NHL season on social media.
In 2018, the league received more than 500,000 votes from June 4 to 15. It was the first year of the program, which came together at the last minute with little promotion. This year, the NHL has doubled the length of voting time for fans to May 15 to June 15 and expanded promotion. More than one million fan votes are expected this year, according to a spokesperson.
More than 65 NHL players, all 31 NHL teams, and the newest expansion NHL Seattle franchise, are featured in videos and graphics across the 20 categories.
Fans can vote at NHL.com/FanChoiceAwards and share their selections across their social platforms with the official hashtag #NHLFanChoice. Fans can also watch a teaser video of the 2019 NHL Fan Choice Awards.
“The 2019 Fan Choice Awards celebrate our players' personalities and provide an inside look at their lives, both on and off the ice,” states NHL CMO Heidi Browning. “Hockey fans are passionate about their favorite teams and players and the Fan Choice Awards allows us to engage them in new ways.”
Categories include Best Beard, Best Fan Video, Top Team Video, Best Bromance, Best Goalie Mask, Best Hockey Smile, Best Dog, Best Feel-Good Moment, Best #HockeyTwitter Moment, Best Mascot, Goal of the Year and Save of the Year.
