The series of three covers showcase each star by himself and a third featuring Holland and Gyllenhaal posed together. EW reports these are the only magazine covers the stars will appear on to promote the project.
The moving images on the covers were shot by photographer team JUCO on a RED camera created to capture motion portraits.
“Creating Entertainment Weekly’s first digital cover has been an exciting journey — mostly one of listening to our audience of passionate entertainment fans about what they want to see from magazine covers right now,” stated Shana Naomi Krochmal, EW’s digital director.
“Digital covers will become a recurring part of EW’s editorial calendar going forward as we continue to create the best EW experience for fans wherever they are passionate about entertainment, including digital, social and print platforms.”
The covers launched simultaneously across EW.com, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and will also be featured in a special edition of the brand’s Snap Discover.
Fans can also download a special lens for Snapchat and filter for Facebook Stories that can put them inside the EW digital cover. The lens and filter include footage from the cover shoot of a real tarantula that virtually creeps across users’ faces.
The issue is packed with digital content related to the film and its stars, including the cover story and a behind-the-scenes tour of the photo studio led by Holland and Gyllenhaal. Videos highlight interviews between the two. Both are available at EW.com and its YouTube and IGTV channels.
More related stories will appear throughout the week of July 1 across EW platforms.
